Yulia has just released her second album titled "Montage" and you can find out more about her by going to her official site where you can listen to clips of all her songs.

and also her fansite

She is Russian born but has lived in New Zealand for 4 years. Her voice is smooth and powerful. Her selection of songs suits her voice. I recommend her to you.

Yulia on holiday before touring
18 April 2006
By ANDREA DEUCHRASS

Russian-born "popera" sensation Yulia took a breather in Queenstown during Easter before a busy year of touring to promote her latest album, Montage.

"I love it here, especially the air," she said.

"It's so strong and fresh it almost hurts your nose. There are not many places on earth that are so untouched."

The 20-year-old's second album went straight to No 1 on the New Zealand music charts after its release on April 3 but, despite her success, Yulia Townsend spent her holiday with boyfriend Nicholas like any other young person in Queenstown – bungy jumping, skydiving and shopping.

Yulia, who lives in Christchurch and met Nicholas at a party in Dunedin, where he studies, said the long distance relationship was surprisingly easy.

"We manage to see each other about two or three times a month."

Despite the relative normality of her life, few young people could claim to have Australian singer Pete Murray calling them for advice.

In New Zealand to perform with David Gray, Murray was working on an advertisement for the Russian market and phoned Yulia yesterday to check his pronunciation.

"I told him I loved his music and he said he was worried about his second album and how it was going to do in New Zealand, because everyone loved the first album so much."

The launch of a second album is a concern to every artist, it seems, but Yulia was sure Montage was going to do well.

"I've put my heart and soul into it," she said.

"If an artist is showing a great love for what they're doing, people can feel it."

'If an artist is showing a great love for what they're doing, people can feel it.' Yulia

Montage had a more upbeat feel to it than Into the West, which portrayed her feelings of homesickness, she said.

"Montage is a strong album that portrays a stronger person."

Overcoming a "troubled" time after the hype of her debut album died down, Yulia was again happy to be doing what she loved.

"I didn't know about the ups and downs and that it could all be so dramatic, from travelling the world and going to interviews one day to sitting at home and thinking `what now?'" A New Zealand tour is being organised for July, but Yulia said she would love to travel to Europe later in the year.

Her early rise to stardom had allowed her to tour with "fantastic" professionals such as Amici and meet the likes of Pavarotti.

"I was so star struck when I met him last year. He's still such a professional at the age of 70. He just laughed when my manager said they would like to get me from a mezzo soprano to a soprano because they earn more."

Yulia said she was happy with her voice, however, because it allowed her to explore pop music.

"Pop music allows me to express my personality but I also love doing the occasional aria because I can show my ability."

She was disappointed with magazine covers of American pop idols such as Hillary Duff, because home-grown talent like Haley Westenra provided good motivation for young people to set goals.

"I like hip hop and pop too but I do think young people need to be motivated to make something of their lives."

So who does Yulia look up to? "Barbara Streisand is my hero, my idol. I love her music and that she stays true to herself. She's proud of her background, because she's partly Jewish."
