Nick in ETO's La Tragedie de Carmen

Nick will be performing with the English Touring Opera in their autumn production of La Tragedie de Carmen.

La tragédie de Carmen is opera at its most powerful, a raw and visceral adaptation of Bizet’s most popular work. Peter Brook and his collaborators have crafted a concentrated night of theatre that focuses on the fatal relationships between the gypsy, soldier, village girl and bullfighter.

The score retains all of the most famous musical moments of the original; Carmen’s Habanera and Seguidilla, Don Jose’s Flower Song, and Escamillo’s swaggering Toreador Song. Directed by Andrew Steggall, conducted by Gareth Hancock, and featuring Leah Marian Jones sings the title role, with Sinead Campbell as Micaëla, David Curry as Don Jose, and Nicholas Garrett as Escamillo.

Oh my that is a long tour, all the way into November.

It's lovely to see Nick listed for so many performances,especially as he's been relatively quiet of late....I just hope I can get to see Carmen as October is quite hectic for me already.I would love to see him perform the Torreador's song in character, especially after seeing him perform it both with Amici and as a solo artist, it's a great song for him and one which he always performs so expressively.

Rusalka and La tragédie de Carmen for English Touring Opera's Autumn 2008 season

ETO to tour UK regions with Dvorak masterpiece and Bizet adaptation

Taking opera to the regions is no easy task, but after a strong spring season with Don Giovanni, Susannah and Anna Bolena, English Touring Opera has now announced the two productions for its autumn tour.

Dvorak's underrated masterpiece Rusalka will be presented alongside La tragédie de Carmen, Peter Brook's revision of Bizet's Carmen.

Opening at the Hackney Empire on 9 October 2008, ETO will take both productions to Malvern, Exeter, Lincoln, Kendal, Snape Maltings, Bath, Buxton and Tonbridge Wells, ending with a week-long stint at Cambridge Arts Theatre from 25 to 19 November.

Rusalka is all too rarely performed in the UK – though Renee Fleming is to sing the title role at the Met next season – so the opportunity to witness it live is not to be missed. Telling the story of a love affair between a mermaid and a prince, the opera is crowned by the popular 'Song to the Moon'. Dvorak's score will be performed in a chamber version for James Conway's new production, which is designed by Paul Wills and conducted by Alex Ingram.

Returning to ETO after a critically-acclaimed Susannah earlier in the year, Donna Bateman will sing the role of Rusalka. Richard Roberts will play the Prince, Fiona Kimm is Ježibaba, and the very promising Camilla Roberts sings the part of the Foreign Princess.

The company's other offering, La tragédie de Carmen, is described as 'opera at its most powerful, a raw and visceral adaptation of Bizet's most popular work'. The adaptation is by Peter Brook, Marius Constant and Jean-Claude Carrière, who 'have crafted a concentrated night of theatre that focuses on the fatal relationships between the gypsy, soldier, village girl and bullfighter'. However, we're assured that all the big numbers remain; the opera is performed in French with surtitles.

Casting-wise, it's a luxury to have Leah-Marian Jones (who was the best thing about The Royal Opera's revival of La Cenerentola at Christmas) in the title role. Soprano Sinead Campbell will play Micaëla; David Curry stars as Carmen's lover, Don Jose; and baritone Nicholas Garrett will be Escamillo.

Andrew Steggall will direct ETO's new production, which will be conducted by Gareth Hancock.

That is so great, to have a Touring Opera Company! Both Opera's are well worth seeing, but if you have to chose, see Carmen.
Then come on here and tell me what you thought - especially of Escamillio.

Nick mentioned on Sunday that rehearsals for Carmen are going extremely well. They have only been in rehearsals for one week but have already had a full run through and the director said that the remaining 3 weeks will just be spent "tweaking". Nick is excited about playing Escamillo in Carmen and was really pleased to hear that many of his fans would be going to see it. Smile

I will write a review on this when I have regained my composure.Nick was on top form and definitely the strongest singer from amongst the cast. He acted his role very well although he did distract from the plot on occasions, firstly by appearing topless in one scene (and I think his gym workouts have paid off) and then when dressing to go out to the bullfight put on a bright pink torreador outfit!!! Any Garrett Girl will know that Nick does not do pink, so of course on behalf of you all I took the opportunity to tease him about this afterwards....he took it all in good humour though.
I'll post more later and do a full review in due course. Smile

Looking forward to the review, it sounds like Nick was in top form in more ways then one. My eyes would of been burning with that bright Pink outfit though...with tears of laughter that it. Laughing

I'm sure he looked adorable in it, a certain pink GG is going to love this one.
