Hear here

Listening. It sounds so simple. You take your seat in the concert hall, sit back and listen. Put on a CD, turn up the volume and soak up the sounds. But, are we really listening? Or, are we losing the ability to truly listen and turning music into a barely-noticed audio backdrop for other activities?

Today saw the launch of a bold new multi-media project designed to encourage people to think about the way they listen to music and explore the many different factors that impact the way we listen.

Hear Here! is the UK’s first classical music listening project, presented by the Royal Philharmonic Society and Classic FM, with support from the Paul Hamlyn Foundation launching in January 2008 with live performances, on air on Classic FM and online.

At the centre of the project will be the live concert experience with performances of key works from Purcell, Stravinsky, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Dvorak, Mendelssohn, Walton and Vaughan Williams nationwide. Performance partners include the Philharmonia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and many more. Soloists Stephen Isserlis, Paul Lewis and Angela Hewitt will also be playing a key role.

Hear Here! will develop month-by-month, from January 2008. Each month a different aspect of listening will be explored and investigated, to encourage us all to think about the music that we listen to in a completely different way.

Classic FM will be featuring Hear Here! on air right across the schedule throughout 2008, with regular features and music linked to the monthly listening topic and key work. The programming kicks off with a special Evening Concert on 16 January 2008 when Nick Bailey presents a Czech-themed programme around the Dvorak Cello Concerto. Classic Newsnight, The Guest List, the Classic FM Magazine Show and Classic FM Arts Daily will provided regular features on air.

A dedicated website at www.hearhere.org.uk will provide an interactive resource for the project with content changing and building month by month. It will feature reflections from leading musicians, interactive material, audio and video, as well as details of each months key events.

But, you don't have to wait till January to take part, click here and take part in our national survey about your listening habits.
