Rejoice

In a nutshell...

Soaring classical lyrics, varied selection.

What's it all about?

Welsh warbler Katherine Jenkins releases a collection of 13 tracks mixing classics with new tunes - including two written especially by Take That's Gary Barlow. Songs ranging from West Side Story's Somewhere to Seal's Kiss From a Rose get the Jenkins treatment, offering something for everyone - providing they like the operatic style, of course.

Although the selection of songs seems a little haphazard, combining all-time musical theatre greats, pop songs and new material, the orchestral presentation and Jenkins' soaring vocals help to give some sense of continuity and holds the disc together as a whole.

However, it should be noted that this is undoubtedly for classical music fans only - the diva has quite definitely not done a Charlotte Church, despite the appearance of more modern music on the inlay card.

Who's it by?

Katherine Jenkins has enjoyed a prolific yet short recording career, with four record-breaking albums released in the past four years - and says she is ready to move on to the next stage, giving a more pop-based edge to her own music, rather than the classical recordings she is known for.

"It's a natural progression to do songs written especially for me, with a big pop production," she explains. But she adds that there is little chance of her becoming a diva, as the most she ever requests is some water and chocolate for after the show.

As an example...

"When did I get so sensible?/Make me a fool again./My life was a half-empty glass/Now it's half-full again." - Rejoice

Likelihood of a trip to the Grammys

Classical music remains something of a niche which Jenkins admits she has forged her way into strategically over her first four albums. However, she currently enjoys a relatively unchallenged position at the top of the genre, meaning any awards ceremony with a suitable category may prove a winner.

What the others say

"While on this release she continues to tackle pieces from the classical repertoire and 'classicised' renditions of pop standards, it also sees her developing more of a pop sound, with big production numbers sung in English." - Amazon UK

"In Rejoice, her fifth studio album, she moves away from her tried and tested operatic formula to include pop songs written by some of the world's top songwriters, including Take That's Gary Barlow." - Western Mail

So is it any good?

Jenkins' suggestion that she is to move away from the classical sound could have fans fearing the worst - although the transition worked for Charlotte Church in the end, it was not without its stumbling blocks.

But if this album is anything to judge by, there is little to be afraid of; the newer tracks are presented in a style in keeping with Jenkins' previous work and fit snugly alongside the classics such as Somewhere.

If anything, the album appears not to have moved towards a pop sound, but to have taken pop songs more toward the classical style, with orchestral backing topped off by Jenkins' accomplished vocal performance.

Personally, I like it - it's nice to hear familiar tunes treated with respect. But it won't be everybody's cup of tea, that's for sure, so the uninitiated should approach with caution.

7/10

review

From the opening note you are mesmerised by the sensational voice. This diva dreamboat has a set of the vocal cords that could melt diamonds.

The Welsh angel's singing on new album Rejoice is simply flawless. But the most impressive aspect is Jenkins' vocal range. She moves effortlessly from pop (Seal's Kiss From A Rose) to classic (Sancta Maria).

Rejoice sees a link-up with Take That's Gary Barlow who has written two tunes for the album. One of these, Shout in Silence, is the record's outstanding track. In reality, though, this young woman could transform The Birdie Song into a classic.
