* Songs of Praise: BBC 1: Aled travels to Manchester to visit Gorton Monastery, a masterpiece of Catholic architecture. He meets the local people who have battled for 11 years to save the monastery from dereliction and who are now seeing their efforts rewarded in a multi-million pound restoration scheme. Music from Heather Small and the Manchester University Chamber Choir includes the hymns Angel Voices Ever Singing, Come Down O Love Divine and a performance of God So Loved the World.
* The Choir BBC radio 3: 6.30 - 8.00 Aled presents the first in an occasional series as part of The Choir, examining the breadth and variety of singing in every part of the British Isles. In this programme the focus is Wales and, with composer and writer Geraint Lewis as his guest, Aled explores how the proud choral heritage of "the land of song" is being vibrantly reinvented by choirs of the younger generation.
This choral pilgrimage begins in the valleys of South Wales and the male voice choirs of the industrial era that are still singing strong. As a contrast, younger mixed choirs, such as Cardiff-based Serendipity, are bringing new energy to old favourites. Moving along the coast, the spotlight falls on Barry-born Grace Williams and St David's Cathedral choir in west Wales, the first cathedral choir in Britain to introduce girls into its ranks.
In Wales, great young choirs are often brought to prominence in choral competitions. Aled presents one of them Cywair of Newcastle Emlyn, winners of this year's Côr Cymru (Choir of Wales) competition. Finally, in North Wales, the legacy of choral composer William Mathias is discussed, one of the few Welsh composers that established an international reputation.
