Patrizio Buanne

Hamer Hall, Friday

Reviewer Xenia Hanusiak

The new voice of seduction, Italy's Patrizio Buanne glided on stage to a full house of adoring fans- mainly female, some as young as five and others old enough to be his great or even great great grandmothers.

Yes there were ear piercing squeals that would pierce eardrums and clearly even the men in the audience were enjoying themselves.

The smouldering voice of Buanne, and his suave Neapolitan looks have caught the imagination of audiences with his nostalgic album, The Italian recorded two years ago. He reincarnates a vocal style of a bygone era with echoes of Frank Sinatra, Louis Prima, Perry Como, Dean Martin and Tony Bennett repackaged in a twenty something female fantasy.

Buanne's sexual appeal is more metro-sexual than macho.

His signature is the classic cabaret singer. As the night proceeds the timeless black tuxedo offers further intrigue, as the tie becomes looser and the jacket- but not the shirt, is shed.

For his first sold-out Melbourne concert, Buanne reiterated his Italian album and gave a preview of his next.

The Italian classics were treated to sharp orchestrations, care of his touring band and Melbourne freelancers.

Buanne is a natural singer who is canny. He brings out a host of vocal colors in each song, making each moment memorable.

His new album seems to steer towards a modern pop line with songs such as Forever sitting comfortably as a pop anthem.

For my pleasure, Buanne was at his most compelling in the scaled-down renditions of Neapolitan folk songs.

With the simplicity of an acoustic guitar accompaniement, he showed consummate artistry in the art of song delivery.

As far as favorites such as Quando, Quando, Quando and That's Amore are concerned, Peter Allen said it best.

Everything old is new again.

It was so sad to hear that some so called fans walked out on Pat's Brisbane concert, because he lost his voice. He didn't wish to cancel his performance, but some people jumped onto his site, expressing their disappointment.

I hope he gets better very soon, those people who walked out, as you, Trish and I know, Patrizio gives so much and even more to the fans, his performances to date here in Australia have just been incredible, well in walking out on him, they have shown a lack of respect and are not true fans in the first place. He can hardly help becoming sick.

Get well soon Patrizio. Our thoughts are with you.
