I have decided to run the London Marathon this year as it has always been my aim in life to do it one day. That day is arriving, quickly! I wanted to do it for a few reasons, firstly I’m incredibly competitive, even with myself and it allows me to act very strongly on those competitive urges.

Also, it’s an amazing way of giving inspiration to others. As our lives have changes so much now and we have grown in profile, one great thrill will be running to excite and inspire not just my family and friends but also the many fans now out there supporting us in everything we do.

Finally and most importantly, the London marathon is designed to raise lots and lots of money for incredibly needy charities. I have chosen to run for Breast Cancer Care, who offer a wide range of services to people through their diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. This allows patients and their families to get the vital information and support that they so badly need at these difficult times.

I have chosen to run for Breast Cancer Care as breast cancer has affected my family directly over the last couple of years. My Aunty sadly passed away after extensive treatment for breast cancer and I found it very difficult to see such an energetic person become ill and eventually lose her life through this disease. She was my Dad’s twin sister and the effect that it had on him was so saddening.

I found it difficult to watch him go through that and I feel that by raising money for Breast Cancer Care I am in some way doing my little bit for my Aunty and my family, plus the many others who go through the same thing each and every year.

The London Marathon is a truly momentous occasion. I’ve always watched it with interest, but I can honestly say that I never thought I’d ever take part in it. When initially starting a new fitness regime back in February 2005 to get fit for G4’s first tour later that year, I could hardly run 10 minutes without being completely out of breath. So I trained hard and it certainly benefited me. An improved diet has also made me feel so much healthier.
At the end of last year, some of us considered running the London Marathon, but at the time it seemed a crazy idea. I’m now thrilled and somewhat overwhelmed to say that I’ll be running it this year. It will be an incredible challenge for me personally as I’ve certainly never considered myself a long-distance runner!
It is also the perfect opportunity to raise money for charity, in my case, Bowel Cancer UK (formally Colon Cancer Concern or CCC), which is a leading charity dedicated to raising awareness, improving the quality of those affected and ultimately, reducing deaths from bowel cancer. It also provides information, support and advice for those affected by bowel cancer, including their carers and families and increases knowledge and understanding of the symptoms and prevention of bowel cancer through awareness campaigns.
Sadly, cancer claimed the lives of two of my grandparents. More recently, my Dad was diagnosed with bowel cancer in June 2004. His positive attitude throughout this time has been totally awe-inspiring and I’m sure it will give me great strength when running the marathon.
Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the UK, with over 35,000 people being diagnosed each year and nearly 16,000 dying from it, claiming a life ever 30 minutes. However, if diagnosed in the early stage, bowel cancer if highly treatable.
So, please support me by sponsoring what is the biggest physical challenge of my life. Your donations will help patients and families affected by bowel cancer, many of whom rely on the support of Bowel Cancer UK.’

“For me, the London Marathon is the ultimate mental and physical test. For years I’ve watched the marathon on TV and felt great admiration for those taking part.

“The opportunity to tie in this great challenge with the chance to raise money for charity is one that really excites me. For as long as I can remember, mental illness has been prevalent within my family and my experiences with that have inspired me in the past to do a lot of voluntary work in this field. The chance to run in the London Marathon for the Mental Health Foundation gives me the opportunity to give something back to the people who helped those I care about, and as such it is a charity that lies close to my heart.

“I look forward with great anticipation to crossing the finish line knowing that not only have I completed one of the most difficult and unlikely challenges of my life so far, but, with your help I have generated funds for a charity that helps people with real problems to survive and recover from them.”

Really interesting read - thanks Molly. It's nice to hear why the guys in G4 are running, and that it means something different, but still very important, to each of them individually.
