another article on the show
Russell to the rescue
M.E.N

NEW ROLE: SALFORD tenor Russell Watson has stepped in to save the day after a shock departure from a major new TV show. Just The Two Of Us pairs celebrities with internationally renowned singers for a duet-singing showdown on BBC1 from next week.

But producers were faced with a big problem when Newton-le-Willows-born Rick Astley quit earlier this week, leaving Cutting It actress partner, Sian Reeves, in the lurch.

Now, opera star Russell has come to her rescue with just eight days before the first show, hosted by husband and wife team Vernon Kay and Tess Daly.

Eighties singer Rick had already appeared in trailers for the series and mystery surrounds his decision to leave.

Angry Sian, who played Sydney in the Manchester hairdressing drama, said: "We spent a week getting to know each other and learning the songs, so this is like being punched in the face."

Disillusioned

Rick - whose hits included Together Forever and Never Gonna Give You Up - was said to have become "disillusioned".

It's not the first time he's chosen to step out of the spotlight. In 2004, he was coaxed back to performing and recording more than a decade after he gave it all up.

And last year, he told the M.E.N: "I'm not prepared to leave my cosy home and family if I'm not loving it. If I really hate the process, I'll just go back in my cave again."

Sian and Russell are now working hard to catch up on lost rehearsal time. Eight couples will compete, singing with a live band. A panel of judges and viewer voting will decide on the winning duo.

Among those also taking part are Manchester-born ABC singer Martin Fry and TV host Gaby Roslin; Alexander O'Neal and news presenter Fiona Bruce; Curtis Stigers and GMTV's Penny Smith, plus Beverley Knight and Nicky Campbell.

The team behind Strictly Come Dancing has created the show, which begins a week tomorrow. It's the first time Bolton-born Vernon and Stockport-raised Tess have presented together on TV as husband and wife

What a wonderful program, can't wait to hear about it, and Russell will be perfect, we already know this!!! Just wish we could see it in the USA.....maybe one day it will come to the USA. We have so many competition programs, latest being the Dancing with celebrites, and it is very good. But yours sounds much more interesting.

Thank you Val, I like the way Russells fans stick together and share. I am still on a high from New Zealand, but sadly I had no photo's that were able to be used.
If I am lucky enough to have a next time, I will be investing in a better camera.

I am sooo happy to read this rainy, I just can't remember Sian singing in Cutting It, but it was a great series I loved watching it.
Trouble was anyone who hadn't seen it from the start could not possibly 'catch up' !! Rolling Eyes

Russell Watson and Sian Reeves

Once a factory worker from Salford following in his father's footsteps, now an internationally-acclaimed singing star!

Russell Watson has sold millions of records and sung for presidents and prime ministers, the Pope, and even the Beckham's at their pre-World Cup charity event.

Russell has a voice powerful enough to fill a football stadium and gentle enough to make anyone cry.

A lifelong Manchester United fan, Russell's big break came in May 1999 when he was invited to Old Trafford to sing before United's Premiership-winning match.

His performance of the World Cup anthem Nessun Dorma received a standing ovation.

This was followed by a string of sports-related performances and that summer he was invited to appear as guest artist with Sir Cliff Richard in Hyde Park.

Russell's 1.5 million-seller debut album The Voice reached No.5 in the UK pop charts and No.1 in the classical chart and stayed there for a year.

It also went international getting to No.1 in the US, making him the first British male to simultaneously occupy the top of both charts.

He was only knocked off the Classical charts by his next album Encore which went double platinum in the UK and stayed in the charts for 30 weeks.

He has won four Classical Brit awards - two for Best Classical Album (The Voice and Encore), Best Classical Debut Album (The Voice) and Male Artist of the Year.

This year Russell will be back with a new album released in March entitled Russell Watson: The Voice: The Ultimate Collection.

But first, he's teaming up and teaching Sian.

Sian Reeves is best known for her role as Sydney Henshall in BBC ONE's hit salon-wars drama Cutting It and is currently Pauline in ITV1's six-part series Northern Lights alongside Robson Green and Mark Benton.

Sian is no stranger to singing with her most recent public performance as Sydney in Cutting It. Her character was an aspiring pop star and she performed Second Best is Not for Me.

After playing the role of Sydney for four years, Sian believes she has damaged her voice because: "I'm always speaking on my chords and it's left me with a dirty jazz bar voice."

She hopes that taking part in Just the Two of Us will give her the opportunity to get her vocal range back and hit the high notes again.
