Well Grassington certainly is in a beautiful part of the country and the weather was glorious. It was hot in that marquee and poor Alfie was just about melting under the stage lights but his singing was of course a joy to listen to.

Alfie said his new album will be out in October and will be a tribute to Franz Lehar. He sang ‘You are my heart’s delight’, ‘Patiently smiling’ from Land of Smiles and ‘Farewell my love farewell ‘ from Frasquita (to aahs from the audience at the end), along with other arias and neapolitan music, quite a lot from his CD’s but some I hadn’t heard before.

Quite a lot of banter went on with the audience in the second half. Alfie asked if there were any questions then somebody asked if anyone knew a good car mechanic. After Alfie went off stage for a few minutes while the string quartet played he came back and said the car was fixed but it was up on bricks, and suggested it might be something to do with some riff raff from Fleetwood who seemed to have gatecrashed one side of the marquee (I’m sure they were quite respectable really!!).

When some poor unfortunate man went out of the marquee for a few minutes Alfie leapt off the (quite high) stage and ran off to fetch him back in, to cheers from the audience. I thought he would be too breathless to sing the last song but of course he wasn’t. There was a great atmosphere and the evening finished to a standing ovation from the audience. It was quite a long way to go but well worth it and I enjoyed every moment.
