JONATHAN ANSELL in Concert

Jonathan Ansell, the charismatic tenor with the sensational voice, shot to fame three years ago as the lead singer in classical group G4 when a finalist in The X Factor.

Now established as a solo singer in his own right, Jonathan is taking a break from his national tour with HAYLEY WESTENRA to perform a special concert at The Buccleuch.

Jonathan, who quickly became the stand-out favourite of the fans on the X Factor, achieved amazing success with the classically-trained group G4, who announced their split in early 2007. But surpassing this, he has now achieved a debut solo album that topped the classical charts and also hit the top ten of the pop charts.

Finally getting round to this now I have some peace and quiet

There was an announcement before the show about no pics or recordings, which was a shame really, although, despite the heat, everyone in the show looked great.

The show opened with Raven who did 3 numbers and were warmly received by the crowd. Their album was on sale, but, unfortunately, Jonathan's wasn't

After Raven had finished and vacated the stage Jonathan was announced to rapturous applause. First up was the theme from Gladiator with a backing track followed by Raven being announced by Jonathan to come back onto the stage along with Andy Moore and Tim Maple. Next up was Canto Della Terra and the sheer power of that voice was amazing as he had done a soundcheck/rehearsal for around 5 hours !!!! This was followed by My Own True Love, the joke about Lee Evans and his suits came in here, Se, Aranjuez and Be My Love. As Suz has already said, there was much wiping of the face with a towel because of the heat and the spikes going ever higher and loads of drinking of water, which he quipped was more that his rider !! Raven then left the stage to Andy, Tim and Jonathan who went into If You're Not The One with Andy and Tim doing backing vocals for him from the 2nd chorus - apart from the high notes that is !! We had heard Andy trying to reach them earlier on , but he just couldn't quite make it Andy and Tim then left the stage and backing tracks were used for Panis Angelicus and then the first half finished with Who Wants To LIve Forever to thunderous applause from the audience

The second half began with Raven doing another 3 numbers then it was back to Jonathan again with backing track for Libiamo, at the end of that the audience were cheering now as well as applauding as they had had a few 'refreshments' during the interval Raven, Andy and Tim came back on stage for You'll Never Walk Alone, which Jonathan fluffed his words on (bless him - it just had to be done ) Next for the Ansell treatment was Danny Boy and I kept waiting for the other 3 guys to appear on this one , then it was into O Sole Mio with a few jokes about it making you want an ice-cream LOL LOL He said it was the hottest gig he had ever done and wondered how the press would interpret that one !! Next up was old favourite To Where You Are. Raven then left the stage again to Andy, Tim and Jonathan who announced about Michael Jackson's sad passing last week and said he had been working on this one for a while and they then launched into She's Out Of My Life, which he sang stupendously !!! Then it was onto the one that had been expected to be aired at Skegness, but Jan and I had heard him rehearsing and we were - is it ?, isn't it? and when we realised it was we clapped and cheered hoping they would leave it in and they did - it was Pour Mon Ame from Fille Du Regiment, which was absolutely amazing !!!!! I was a bit worried about this one with all those high C's and wondered how my head would take them, but, thankfully, I got through it Jonathan got thunderous applause and cheers when he had finished singing that one and it was more than well deserved as he did a splendid job of it I thought After that it was back to backing tracks for Here's To The Heroes to more cheerign and thunderous applause. He finally did Nessum Dorma with a backing track. All that power and those notes deservedly got cheering, applause and a standing ovation from the whole hall. He then said he'd do another song and asked for suggestions and someone shouted out Bohemian Rhapsody, to which he replied that one would be some task !! He settled on Be My Love again to yet another standing ovation when he had finished. He also thanked everyone involved backstage etc when he was halfway through the song and said he'd come back - for God's sake Jonathan please come when it's cooler weather though 'cos those flippin'midges while we were waiting for you all to come out were horrendous - they show no mercy to anyone !!!

There were a few ladies waiting to get their tickets signed and I got Jan to give them a Jonathan postcard for signing that I had in my bag with the Web addy on them. One couple of ladies she was talking to are doing Skegness I think as one of them came from that direction and was down on a holiday,

I think he certainly made a few new fans in Langholm and the Staff during the afternoon while I was sitting in the Foyer were commenting on how good he was during his rehearsal
