"...the real showstopper of the season is a semi-staged production of “Cavalleria Rusticana,” starring none other than Andrea Bocelli.

Yes, that Bocelli. And yes, it's already virtually sold out.

While that might not be good news if you're just learning about the show, it's very good news for the San Antonio Opera, which can use the attention and funds from that performance to help support the rest of the season.

Traditionally, 40 percent of a production's budget comes from box office revenue. The other 60 percent comes from a variety of contributions, grants and endowment funds. But a sellout of a big-ticket show like Bocelli's appearance means the season is on solid footing.

Carrying the success of big-name shows over into the regular season is, in fact, part of O'Dell's charge.

“The good thing about Bocelli and (the opera's 2007 concert featuring Plácido) Domingo is that it has tremendously increased our profile with audience and donors,” O'Dell said in a subsequent phone interview. “But the challenge is that we have to do a good job of shifting that audience and the donors ... over to operas we produce all the time, to our core season.”

So his intent for this year is “to make sure those people that have bought tickets to Bocelli understand there's a full rich season of musical theater that awaits them...”

I don't know anything much about this show/opera, except of course, I've heard the very famous Intermezzo! Laughing

I think having Andrea in this will help people learn more about a work that is perhaps unfairly neglected by major opera companies usually. Very Happy
