GARI GLAYSHER Pirates at Hever Castle Kent

Liz wrote:
Thought I would just repost this and then update it.

This is the latest from the web site run by myself and Gari who is a close friend.

http://www.myspace.com/gariglaysherfansite

on his show at Hever Castle which actually starts today 21st July 2008 with a dress rehersal which is also a show where the audience are charged only five pounds and it goes to the local hospice.

Pirates at Hever Castle

22 Jul - 27th 2008 sees the start of a Gilbert and Sullivan production of The Pirates of Penzance at the beautiful Hever Castle in Kent.

www.heverlakeside.co.uk

Gari will be joining Opera Options for this to play the part of Frederic, a Pirate apprentice who suffers from a conscience, so much so that when he finds that he has been apprentice to a Pirate instead of a Pilot as intended, he remains true to his indentures and becomes a faithful member of the Pirate band.

But on his 21st birthday his indentures expire and he sees it as his duty to then devote himself to their extermination, with the help of the Major General, his daughters and the Sergeant of Police. But a terrible discovery is made for Frederic was born on 29th February in a leap year, and with only a birthday every four years counting by birthdays he is only five years old, and consequently still a Pirate.

Opera Options have devised some surprises and novelties for this presentation of one of their most popular G&S productions. It bubbles over with fun, witty dialogue and wonderful music, and is a brilliant celebration of the company's 21st season at Hever!

Gari makes a very dashing young Pirate apprentice

Gari tells me that last nights dress rehersal and charity show went well this is what he says about it.

" The dress last night was a typical dress/tech, the first act, people were finding there feet. I managed to find a pirates nose with my sword, which while it could have been very dangerous it made him and everyone laugh, especially with me keep saying "I am terribly sorry" every five mins after. It was hard to feel any pace with the first act but the second act seemed to click into gear and then the energy started building."

Lets wish him Luck with tonights.

Gari says that they had a great first night and that this one was an extra one that had been added because the ticket sales had been so good, and also because it would be the last time the theatre would be at that venue.
I believe that it is to move to another location I will put more on that at the bottom of the bulletin.

Gari had this to say about his show

" Well had a great first night, I managed to get through the evening without sticking my sword into anyone, but the Pirate King managed to break a glass with his.

I think it was the best I had ever sung Frederic "

So provided they are careful with those swords Ahhhh I would say all is going very well.

And we wish him a GREAT show tonight.

This is from the Lakeside Theatre about the move.

We were obviously saddened, albeit understanding, by the news that the owners of Hever Castle would like to reclaim their beautiful Italian loggia and lakeside setting. However, they were keen that the Theatre should continue, and so together we have worked for some 18 months on finding another suitable location.

Mission Accomplished!

In the spring of 2008, and after considering a number of alternative sites, we have selected a new theatre site on Two Sisters Lawn which lies just above the Italian Garden. We believe it provides terrific potential for the future development of the theatre facilities at Hever in 2009 and beyond, allowing us to explore new programming opportunities, whilst retaining full access to the lakeside picnicking experience, peaceful ambience of the Italian Garden, and facilities of the Pavilion Restaurant.

The move to the new location will of course involve a measure of re-equipment and development that will require a sizeable investment. Which is why we are looking towards this year’s Summer Festival to generate some of the finance needed for this purpose.

Last nights show Gari says was an evenful one and very Hot weather wise that is :0)
for those of you who are not involved in shows just think how hard it is for those on stage acting and singing those in heavy costumes, and last night the men were suffering very much from the heat.

Gari had a little trouble with his fencing sword too

" eventful is the word I will use too describe last nights show, it started with a funny piece when i was just about to sing my song, I went to put my sword back (Fencing sword) and it would not go in so it kept bending, I made a joke of it and the audience thought it was meant to be. It is definitely a show for swords up noses, falling over and collapsing."

GOOD LUCK for tonights show Gari I hope they have sorted out some kind of fans for you or it is less humid.

Thank You Admin for your interest and kind comments I hope you enjoy this latest.

Seems last nights show was great fun with an extra special guest among the cast who took the house by storm :0)

From Gari

" Another fun filled show last night, really was a good sing and lots fun. The audience was very responsive and found everything more funny.

But one of the funniest moments was just at the end of the trio the Pirate King went to say
"bravely spoken"
and was rudely interrupted by the quacking of a duck, and then I said the line
"Lead on I follow"
when the duck quacked again, and before i could say
"Oh horror"
Pirate King shouted
"I'll kill that bloody duck"
and the whole place fell about. It was a great night a real team sow and team performance."

This show has realy got momentum now and we wish Gari
THE BEST OF LUCK for tonights

Hello hope everyone UK side is enjoying the summer now it has arrived.
Seems like our cast of Pirates are a little tired frpm what has been a wonderful show so far.

From Gari

" The show was good and great fun again but I think you could feel everyone was little tired last night. We had another really good audience who played their part in giving everyone on stage that subconscious lift
It is always wonderful when the audience get all the jokes no matter how subtle and in the first act when I say to Ruth

"Well Ruth I feel some little difficulty about you"

I ended up sounding like Bill & Ben from the flower pot men,
I tried twice to say the line before I turned to the audience and pretended to push my teeth in properly the audience were laughing, I think they might have got the fact that I was referring to my

"INDENTURES".

Anyway had great fun. Two more to go.

Thank You Gari for keeping us all up to date, hope you have a lovely snooze in the sun and recharge for tonight.

GOOD LUCK

From Gari this morning. Very Happy

Well another good show, one of the funniest ones for the audience i think, they got every little thing. It was also the hottest by far, halfway through the first scene we all looked like we were melting.

But another great team performance and now I think we
are all glad that tonight is the last one.

MANY GOOD LUCK WISHES to ALL involved in the show have a wonderful night.

Congratulations to Gari and all the cast for what sounds like a fun and successful run of Pirates at Hever, thank you for all the updates.

I shall be going to see Gari in Carmen in September at the Barn Theatre Oxted, so i am really looking forward to seeing him as Don Jose, Carmen is one of my favourite Operas, wonderful music throughout, colourful and full of passion.

I hope Gari will be listed here soon as his popularity is growing fast, there is another new page dedicated to Gari at imeem.com below, as well as an appreciation group on facebook now. Smile

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank You Rose for telling us that I'm sure you will have a wonderful time with Gari in Carmen. And indeed Gari does have some more exciting shows and concerts on his calender of which more later but first.

The Last evening at Hever Castle I think I will let Gari tell you about in his own words as he is awake and seems to be still buzzing from it this morning

"Had a wonderful last show last night everybody was on top form and another good audience. I think all together this is by far the best I have ever sung and played Frederic. The character of Fred and the humour that is within the part seemed to grow with this show and came out more and more through out the run.
I have to say it was a great cast but the the pirate king who really knows his is G&S played a huge part in the confidence that I had and that built for me, he was fantastic to work with and was one of those people that definitely gave you something on stage. From start to finish this show definitely felt like a real team performance.
I had a great relationship with Ruth and the fun and energy that the pirates created from the start really set you up. One of the highlights for me in this one was also the great feeling I had with all the daughters, from the moment I came back to sing
"Stop ladies pray"
there was something from everyone of them.
There was a wonderful little bit with me and Edith when I sing
"I sore at heart"
as the first time I sing I actually did sing
"I saw a tart"
and Edith turns round tom with such a dirty look and them I sing the real words, it got a wonderful laugh every night.
And the other piece that got a huge laugh was with Kate, who I sang the line
"Homely face a bad complexion"
to. She gets really angry about that line and Edith is taking the mick and I am totally oblivious to the fact that she is not happy, I think maybe you had to see this one rather that me explain but it was funny.
As I say it was a great cast and team and with it being a long run on some really hot nights, I had a lot of fun.
It matters to me most of all from a personal point of view that I know there was an improvement in my singing and acting and that was a big positive for me but I also have to say that this week was the most fun I have ever had on stage in any G&S show and with Pirates being my favorite that made it even more special."

Thank You Gari for such a wonderful write up of the show I hope you have a good rest now between your next rehersals, which I know have already started.

If you missed this production of Pirates you can catch it again in October this time with Derby G&S in the intimate setting of the recently reopened theatre in Chatsworth House, more details of which I will post on the Gari's Fan Site. Hello LadyRose

All artist suggestions are kept listed for consideration (unfortunately we receive too many to reply to each individual).

We make new additions to the artists listed as frequently as possible though so thanks for taking the time to suggest Gari and help introduce him to members here.

PostPosted: Wed Sep 10, 2008 2:08 pm    Post subject: PIRATES SAIL INTO CHATSWORTH Reply with quote

DERBY GILBERT AND SULLIVAN COMPANY and GARI GLAYSHER will be performing The Pirates of Penzance in Chatsworth House in October. This will take place in the converted Theatre.

http://www.chatsworth.org/events/penzance.htm

The room at Chatsworth (featured on the BBC2 Culture Show in 2006) now converted into a theatre, was designed by Sir Jeffry Wyatville as a banqueting room and ballroom for the 6th Duke of Devenshire, and was completed in 1832.

The ceiling is decorated with late 17th century painted panels by Sir James Thornhill and Louis Cheron, painted for the walls of the 1st Dukes Long Gallery, but removed when that room was converted into a Library by the 6th Duke.

The two boxes at the back of the room, and the gallery above, are part of the original furnishing of the room. One was used by Queen Victoria when she attended a ball here in 1843. The room was subsequently used for entertainment of various kinds.

In 1896 the Duke of Devonshire commissioned William Hemsley a leading London designer and supplier of "theatrical scenery and appliances", to fit the room out as a theatre, with a permanent stage, stage equipment, a painted proscenium and front drop curtain, and a number of sets. Most of these remain and are extremely rare survivors of late 19th century scenery.

Between 1898 and 1907 the theatre was used regularly during winter visits of the Prince and Princess of Wales (later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra) with perfomances of plays, dance, and music to entertain the royal house parties.

From 1989 to 2005 the room was used for textile conservation. The room was recently cleared and cleaned in readiness for a number of private ticketed events.

During 2006 different kinds of events were held before deciding how the theatre might be used from 2007 onwards.

Andy Loydall, chairman of Derby Gilbert and Sullivan Company says " It will be a weekend to remember, both for the performers and the audiance, although putting on a fully costumed performance with orcestra is going to be quite a challenge within the constraintes of the stage and auditorium.

We will be able to accomodate only 140 people in the audiance including the two boxes at the back of the room, so getting a ticket for the show will be quite an achievement.

We intend to perform Pirates at 8pm on Friday 3rd October and the ticket will include an interval drink in the Sculpture Gallery. Then there will be a matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday 4th October which will include a Cornish Cream Tea at the interval. The Saturday evening show at 8pm is a Black Tie Gala Performance which includes interval drinks and canapes, again in the Sculpute Gallery. Altogether a fantastic weekend for everyone which will give people a chance to see a great show, this wonderful room and enjoy a memorable theatrical experiance.
