I went to Friday Night Is Music Night this evening, as Aled was meant to be presenting a pre-recorded programme. However, he (Aled) is somewhat unwell and Jonathan was called in to present on his behalf. The programme will be transmitted on June 20th, radio 2, 7.30 - 9.15, so mark this in your diaries!

I must go to bed now, as I am working tomorrow! But will add more details tomorrow evening

xbons, Thank you so much for the breaking news! Very Happy
I'm sorry you missed Aled. I hope he is feeling better now.
Looking forward to hear more about it!
What a challenge for Jonathan it must have been, and I suppose it come with a very short notice Shocked and he spent time with 2 of his fans Wink earlier.
I remember when Jonathan first presented on Cfm, it sounded a bit like Aled when he first presented Cfm on Sunday. Since then Aled progressed and very much at ease, become an excellent presenter. This is a fab. oppotunity for Jonathan, so long Aled isn't anything serious.

Thanks xbons. That is good news for us Jonathan fans - but sad for Aled fans who were going to see him. I'm sorry - I know how disappointed I would have felt if it had been Jonathan. I hope it's nothing too serious for Aled - and that he gets better soon - I have a soft spot for Aled - he is quite lovely.

I look forward eagerly to hearing more when you are rested. It would be good to know who the guests were and how Jonathan did!

It must have been a bit nerve-wracking and hectic for him - at such short notice - and having had to entertain two fans who won a competition that very day -hopefully he did OK on his debut presenting at something like this. Smile

Right – sorry about the delay. I was late back last night – there had to be some repeat recordings, so we were out of the theatre late and I missed my usual train back. And then had other things to do also before bed!

I was informed in the afternoon that Aled would not be there as he was not well, but we decided to go anyway. We were initially told it might be Paul Gambaccini, so Jon was a surprise. He was dressed, incidentally in a dark bluey / grey suit with a red and white striped shirt and a bright red tie.

I know Molly has a soft spot for Aled so to answer her first! Aled was not top notch on GMS on Sunday morning. Then he has a concert in Chester tonight and also tomorrow night, and these were re-scheduled from November so he would not want to miss them if at all possible, so I guess he felt FNIMN had to go by the board. Bridget, the producer, when explaining his absence to the audience, described him as being “poorly”. When the audience all went “aaaahh!” she hastily said – “not very poorly – just – a bit poorly”!! I’m sure I will find out about the concert tonight and will let you know if he was OK for that.

Secondly re the guests: the soloists were Paul O’Neil tenor (the photo on the page CLICK HERE looks like him!) and Elizabeth Watts – see CLICK HERE Both were great! And also the Classic Buskers - see CLICK HERE and for videos: CLICK HERE and CLICK HERE

I asked Bridget a few questions afterwards about how things had worked out – when Jon knew etc. (we landed up going back to Victoria on the tube together). She said they had tried the usual - Paul, Ken Bruce etc – no-one was available. So Jon was very much a last minute stand in – I asked when he knew and she said about midday. He had then arrived at the theatre about 5.00, as indeed Aled does. Aled usually goes out for a snack at some point, returning about 6.15, and presumably Jon did the same. I gather Jon is not as yet a FNIMN regular, but might well be used as a stand in again in the future if the circumstances arise again.

As to the presenting; Aled did not always find it easy when he started (over 2 years ago) – the audience, as you will know, is mainly middle aged +/-, the presenters similar (Paul, Ken etc). Aled was initially the youngster, and took some time to feel comfortable there and be accepted. The audience seem to have got over that now and accept him fully, so Jon was accepted more easily than he might have been earlier. Aled (and presumably the others) prepare their own scripts, and Bridget said he managed to get the script over to them. So Jon did not have to do the research and preparation – he could not remotely have done so in the time available of course – but used Aled’s script (funny as I whispered twice to one of the girls I was with “Aled wrote that – it is exactly him!” - knowing his jokes as I do! - and it was indeed him who had written it). For Jon this was a benefit (he did not have to do the work!) and a disadvantage (he was reading someone else’s work not his own).

Jon did stumble a few times, which was why we had to have some re- records – mainly on the difficult foreign words of places/pieces! In the second half he simply stopped and repeated the phrase - he had seemingly been told to do this, so the first effort could simply be cut out in the preparation for the final broadcast– so you should not hear it! On the re-records, there was one funny bit where he simply could not get out the right words – I think it was the German opera company for which Paul O’Neil sings, but I could be wrong – and tried it about three times. When the second attempt went wrong again, he just said “arrrrrgh!” and tried again – of course the audience just laughed.

But all in all, and considering the very short notice he had, I think Jon did pretty well – listen on June 20th and find out for yourselves!

Thank you so much for filling us in - you are a treasure. I do hope Aled is better soon poor love.

As you say, it is hard enough presenting but when it's not his own script it must have been quite daunting!! Bless him, he did well and it wouldn't have been Jonathan if he didn't make the odd slip! Glad the audience took to him though and followed his laughter over those difficult words. I would have been a complete mess!!

I do hope he will become a regular - even if it as a stand in. He did so well on CMF last month so it will be another string to his bow!!

Thanks again for the review and I hope you got a good nights sleep in after all that!! Very Happy

Thank you so much for that xbons. Great to have the background to what happened.

I'm so glad that Aled is not too poorly - with that heavy schedule I can understand him wanting to keep as well as he could for the Chester concerts - I hope they go OK - and look forward to hearing about them afterwards.

The advantage for Jonathan would have been that Aled had already prepared the script - and Aled is such a great presenter that I know it will have been an excellent one. The disadvantage as you say is that Jonathan was trying to deliver someone elses script. But he would never have had time to prepare anything himself. I shall listen out for the Aledisms which I'm sure will come across clearly..... Smile

Such a great opportunity for Jonathan - I'm so pleased the other presenters werent available on the night! It gave Jonathan a chance and hopefully he will be thought of to stand in again should a presenter be needed. No better way to learn the craft! Thrown in at the deep end!

I like the sound of the guests - and Jonathan's attire sounds lovely (thanks for that info too - great to know what he had on!) very much looking forward to listening in on the 20th June - and thanks again for letting us know all about it.

Love Molly xx Smile

Thank you xbons ,for the review, Iam glad Aled was only poorly and not really ill.
It sounds as though it was a good night ,glad you enjoyed it,
Poor Jonathan he really was thrown in at the deep end ,you say he was told midday, He then went out to lunch with two lucky ladies ,who won a competition at the Hard Rock Cafe,
In one way having Aleds script made it a bit easier, but I think if its something you have written yourself you are more confident ,
but Jonathan will have a go at anything, its something I admire about him,
Iam looking forward to listening to the programme, and it will be all the more interesting knowing all the snippets you have shared with us, Very Happy

That sounds like the outfit Jonathan wore on the tour last year when he did his solo spot!! Very Happy
