Classic FM presenter Myleene Klass welcomed an array of stars to this year’s Classical BRIT Awards launch party. The highlight of the event, held in London earlier this month, was the announcement of the nominees in each award category. Many of them, including male vocal group Blake and viola player Lawrence Power, performed during the evening, while others, such as Natasha Marsh, were just happy to smile for the cameras. Also attending the party were Classical Star pianist Sophie Cashell, singer Will Martin and soprano Hayley Westenra, who was serenaded by Blake and Jonathan Ansell with ‘Happy Birthday’!
The ninth Classical BRIT Awards are being held at the Royal Albert Hall on 8 May, hosted by Myleene Klass.
Once again, the ceremony is featuring an impressive line-up of performers, including opera singer Andrea Bocelli, violinist Nigel Kennedy and soprano Sarah Brightman, who was also at the launch party and whose new album, Symphony, was recently released to great acclaim. Other performers include Bryn Terfel, Anna Netrebko and the guitarist John Williams, while Andrew Lloyd Webber is attending
to collect his Outstanding Contribution to Music award.
Anticipation will be high on the night, particularly among those vying for NS&I Album of the Year. This is the only category voted for by the public and this year it features 10 top recordings by a diverse range of artists. Voting is now closed, so all nominees can do is sit and wait! As for such coveted titles as Male Artist of the Year, will Alfie Boe triumph over Colin Davis and Rolando Villazón? And will Kate Royal beat Lawrence Power and Nicola Benedetti to Young British Classical Performer? There’s much at stake and everything to play for at this year’s Classical BRIT Awards.
Announcing the 2008 line-up, UCJ’s Dickon Stainer and EMI’s Thomas Kaurich said in a joint statement: ‘This show will be the biggest and boldest in the event’s history.’ Could they be right? You’ll have to
be there to find out!

| I reckon alfie stands a good chance, although I wouldn't put it past the Frons or the Dragoons to sneak in there. The Frons were very close last year apparently. |
