WOW what a day and a half that was!!
We arrived to find about 6 people in the queue so we settled down and it wasn't long before we were joined by many more familiar faces.
I were also lucky to be able to get into the first show as well. We were behind the green peppers for this one and had a great view. We had Phil Vickery cooking right in front of us. Lovely man too. Ainsley Harriot is just like he is on screen - another lovely and funny guy. I enjoyed the first show but my mind was constantly on the second!!
We had a 20 minute break to go and get refreshments When we were finally allowed back in for the main event we had to move around so we looked like a different audience so I ended up in the second row behind the red tomatoes. So that meant, we would either have a great view of Jonathan's face or........er....... his behind!!
We were lucky enough that Jonathan came to our side when got was introduced to the audience. He quickly spotted us grinning at him like Cheshire cats and gave a little wave.
At the beginning of the show Jonathan is behind the screens to our side before being introduced on screen which gave us a moment or two to have a brief word. I said he had better watch out for the stick blender this time and he laughed and said ok and had his fingers crossed!
Although we were behind him, we had a great view of his culinary skills – my, has that lad improved since the last time! Very impressive I must say.
I couldn't see much of Hayley and Nick as some of the cameras were in the way but we could here them talking and laughing. Ainsely chatted to Jonathan for quite a while when he was cooking and talked a bit about G4, the album and cooking.
One thing I did notice about Jonathan is how tidy he is and he kept washing his hands - very professional!
Jonathan and Hayley sang a snippet from the duet. I have never heard anything sooooo beautiful. It literally brought tears to my eyes. It was breathtaking. To hear them sing unaccompanied was out of this world. I cannot really describe it so I do hope it comes over on the show how we heard it. It was worth all the wait and traveling just for those few moments.
The 20 minutes went very quickly and we counted down the last 10 seconds. The smells were driving us wild!! The food looked fantastic and it wouldn't have taken much for me to run over and devour the lot!!
It took a few minutes to set the cameras up for the tasting part so it gave us another chance for a quick chat. I told him that he must blog soon as it has been ages and he said he would try and gave a thumbs up and also asked him if he could spare a few minutes with us after the show. He wasn't sure what was lined up for him but he said he would if at all possible. Such a sweetie!
Jonathan was trying to get us all to vote for him of course – not telling you the outcome though!!
I think Jonathan rather enjoyed what he and Phil had cooked as he couldn't get enough of it when he tasted it!! That lad can certainly pack it away!! Wish he could have shared it around though. The food eventually goes round the back and is eaten by the guests and crew when the chefs are doing the last 15 minutes to camera.
Jonathan and Hayley came out again to taste the chef’s food and then they stopped to have photos taken with the WI ladies and we filed out to the fresh air.
It wasn't long before Jonathan came out and spent about 15 minutes with us, signing chatting and posing for photos. Hayely was there too although I didn't notice her at first as she is so small!
Jonathan said that they were still trying to sort out any possible dates for a tour and is still in talks about the Pavarotti show but he added that in a couple of weeks’ time, he would be in talks about another album out by Christmas. I asked what it might be and would it be a Christmas album and he said he didn't know yet but it wouldn't be Christmas songs, just released at Christmas. Personally, I don't mind what would be the theme as it's just great we would get another one so soon.
I got talking to Hayley and said how well their voices blended together and she said now much she enjoyed working with Jonathan for that reason. She is such a sweet girl and tiny!! I asked if she and Jonathan had any other plans to work together apart from the Classical BRITs and she said nothing planned at the moment. Her schedule is just as hectic as Jonathan’s!
It was now time for them to leave in their separate cars but there was just time to get some photos of the two of them together
Jonathan seemed very happy today but did look very tired at the end - not surprising really!!
Thanks Jonathan for a brilliant day and spending yet more time with us. It really is appeciated. _________________ Marian X

Set off to voyage the 10 minute drive down the South Circular to one of my least favourite parts of London – the Wandsworth one way system where this studio is situated. Found the car park rather too easily and so was at the studio at 11:30 only to find some familiar waifs and strays already there. Well after thinking they would let us in around 12:30 had this rather officious woman come and tell us that no one in the queue was getting into the first show – and only the first 20 would get to see the show from a portacabin. She gives us numbers and those over the 20 were sent home – not a good start. Well we persevere and when she comes back and says the first 8 can get it I was one of the lucky ones to get a seat.
The studio is not set up as we expected just 3 rows and only around 60 seats in total so quite small. The red and green kitchens face each other and we the audience are kinda the backdrop. The first show was fun with 2 doctors from Embarrassing Illnesses – it became apparent that the way to win votes is basically to chat up the audience and the guy our side did a great job with Phil Vickery
They take a couple of hours to film the 45 min show but the gaps are interesting – they are not the cooking time but rather once the chefs have been given the ingredients which they don’t have prior knowledge of – the kitchens are set up with all the relevant equipment to hand and the chef and the guest have a bit of a chat about what needs to be done. Then they film the actual cooking, a slight retake on the ending for camera angles, extra time on the actual food, then they come back for the tasting and voting. Then another slight break before someone in the invited audience is interviewed and gives and the bag of ingredients for the final 15mins and again there is a slight break while the kitchen is reset. Quick 10 min cook but again retakes on the actual food.
So we have then a break and we are all turfed out of the studio. The officious lady is at it again and manages to upset people before managing to get everyone and I mean even those who had missed the cut off but had decided to stay – to get in!
We were moved round so the audience looks different and joy from our point of view is that it turns out we are on the Jonathan side. Ainsley introduces Hayley with Nick Nairn and Jonathan with Phil Vickery – I realise I know way too much about both of these chefs but that is also rather nice. Jonathan is wearing a striped blue shirt (looks like the one in the Wikipedia pic) and Hayley black top, tight black jeans and high boots. I am so glad Jonathan is with Phil otherwise I might just have had mixed loyalties!! Phil is really good with the audience and somehow this does not come across on TV - well not so well on This Morning??
Don’t think I am going to tell you too much about the food only to say it was very interesting our side what Phil managed to do with the ingredients. Hayley was obviously not so used to being in a kitchen as Jonathan – she had problems with the stick blender this time and yes they all knew about the previous appearance and rather teased him Smile But when Hayley suddenly said something about not being able to multi task Jonathan says something about not being on as she is a woman – he gets boos and told off by Phil for alienating the audience – but girls we are the ones who can multi task men cannot so I think he was right!!
Ainsley brings the pair of them into the middle to duet – which is unaccompanied and just brilliant and if you want to hear what they sound like together before Classical Brits watch the YouTube clip from This Morning
You will have to watch the show to find out who wins …
The quicky bag this time comes from the WI which results in all sorts of fun but it is really a pudding bag so Phil gets a full house – well he is one of the leading pastry chefs!
Marian will tell you more but she managed to get Jonathan’s’ agreement to come and chat after the show if there was nothing else to do – he and Hayley arrive just before 6 – all sorts of signings and pics take place but others will tell you about this.
Anyway great day and thank you Jonathan for taking me – yet again - to something new
Di
PS Forgot one of the nicest public comments from Jonathan - Ainsley says something about being No 1 and Jonathan says something about fans who are there being part of it - lovely comment Jonathan |
