Festival programme is music to the ears

Artistic director Andrew Cornall has set up an intriguing seven-day programme not short of star names.

The "in" tenor of the moment, Alfie Boe, appears at Chester Cathedral on the night of Sunday, July 20, with La Passione, an exploration of the tradition of Italian song.

The festival runs from July 19-25, and programmes are available by ringing01244 320 722. Booking is on 01244 304 618.

A North Devon Festival review

A RUNNING JOKE FROM ALFIE ………………..

Upon going to a classical concert one usually expects the main star to be classicly clad with black tie and suit. So it was some surprise that Alfred Giovanni Roncali Boe appeared on stage at the Queens Theatre, Barnstaple with his self labelled ‘band’ in tee shirt, jeans and cowboy boots. The fact that the young tenor had ‘trainers 2 run’ with his dress suit did not go unnoticed either.

Alfie Boe, as we may more commonly know him, wanted us to believe he had forgotten his correct dress shoes and the theme ran on from there.

But now to his singing - and what a really good voice he showed us – now both serious and sonorous. The ‘Classic FM’ British tenor held the stage with confidence and superb accompanists. They were on piano Jill Farrow, cello – Tony Woollard and violinist Charlie Brown – each giving great performances in their own right. The theme was ‘ Neopolitan’ music and some of the arias were, I think, unknown to the audience but certainly to me. However they were wonderfully lyrical, and his ability to hold the audience in a largely unfilled theatre in North Devon, with this programme of work, showed professionalism and no pretension, even though he is an acclaimed performer worldwide.

With excellent audience banter the evening was relaxed and informal. By encouraging frivolity about his footwear he turned the tables on one hearty heckler who suggested to Boe that a topical tune would be ‘O Sole Mio’. Boe immediately invited the ‘o sole’ heckler to sing it himself, and a brief sole rendering advertised ice cream. Then the audience turned it back to him. After consultation with the pianist the programme was changed to immediately include a raising rendition of a song that, this time, everyone knew. The standing ovation seemed to please Alfie so much that he left the stage to hug the heckler. A moment to remember we think?

British audiences are usually polite but those that could, stood for an encore – I say he should encore again, and again, with us in Barnstaple, North Devon.
