Now that's interesting news as I am hopefully going to see this with a member of my family. We have both loved the musical since it first came out. It would be great if Josh or another CX featured artist was one of the artists performing.

it's not a rumour Smile It's been a hot topic over at the fan club for many months now after Josh himself confirmed it in an interview with Whoopi Goldberg last year.
I'm going to the May 13 performance, can't wait! Cool

I'm all booked up now too! Smile

I wonder if they will make a DVD recording of it - similar to Les Miserables when they had their 10th anniversary concert. I'm sure it would be a best-seller and would make a wonderful souvenir of the evening for anyone who is able to attend.

Apparently Alf (on Josh's Yahoo fanclub) has a ticket for sale for Chess on May 13th. It's in Stalls row L and he's selling it at the face value of £60. He'd rather sell it to a dedicated fan in the UK. If you're interested let me know, and I'll pass it on to Alf, or give you his email or something.

I am very tempted to buy this ticket, but as usual I really shouldn't as I have too much going on. x

In Josh's video section you can see him singing Anthem from Chess - I think there may be a few more Chess songs on youtube too. It's a great rendition and gives you a taster of what to expect on the night!

The concert was recorded on the 12th and an usher at the RAH said it was for DVD - Has anyone heard if this is true?

Yes I was there last night and it was recorded for DVD to be released around Christmas time.

Here are a few quick thoughts on the evening and it was an interesting comparison with the Classical Brits - Josh was certainly singing better last night or perhaps that should be the song selection was more suitable?

I was lucky enough to see the original version of Chess, but not since so had some ideas as to what I wanted to see and hear. Was a bit concerned it was just us who had real problems with sound and more importantly diction last night (apart from Josh) but having read a few other reviews all concur so hope this is ironed out a bit for the DVD. Last week I went to Classical Brits and they too had probs with sound but that was sorted out pretty quickly - this time it took a lot longer and not sure they ever really got it as good as it could be. But I think I have become very spoilt by Jonathan Ansell as you can hear every word he sings and in this context last night there was an awful lot of discontent about diction - which just shows how good the artists featured on this site are Smile

Quick thoughts -
Kerry Ellis - stole the show - acted and sang magnificently - apart from Josh singing Anthem the only one who really got the tingles going. Really thought they had miscast and should have swapped her and Idina over as I could really see the Russian falling for Kerry rather than the other way round.
Josh Groban - has the most superb voice and the part could have been written for him apart from the fact that he was not born at the time ... Anthem at the end of the first half was the first standing ovation. But I think he needs a little help with the acting there was no Russian accent and no chemistry between the Russian and Florence.
Idina Menzel - way too shrill somehow and the diction was terrible - my friend who does not know the show at all wanted surtitles!!
Adam Pascal - okay but sound let him down, was in too much of a hurry and didn't have the necessary sarcasm in the speaking parts of One Night in Bangkok - could still hear Murray Head after all these years - probably needed more direction in the acting department.
David Bedella - brilliant brought the right amount of gravitas and menace
Clarke Peters - again just right
Marty Pellow - didn't really notice him much because he sang during the sound probs
Cantabile - hysterically wonderful

Staging I really liked - using the RAH organ 'loft' for the Chess Game above the orchestra and a wide screen playing video across the organ pipes to add the scenery, with the choir in the choir stalls either side whose choreography or choralography was just excellent. This all makes great use of the structure of the Albert Hall rather than just being on the stage - there was also surprisingly dancers as I really did not think there would be room but somehow they managed and they too used all the many stair cases in the Hall and this was all finished off with amazing fireworks Smile

Had a fabulous time and would like to see it again very soon but would like a different Florence
