One Chance (Syco Music)

His No. 1 debut on Amazon.ca may have been usurped by Robert Plant and Alison Kraus's Raising Sand, but you know that Potts' CD will still be Top 10 many months after that release is forgotten.

Another triumph for Simon Cowell's Syco Music, and the pop-era genre it pushes, the 10-song album gives you the signature tune "Nessun Dorma" and mega followup "Time to Say Goodbye," as well as an Italian-ized version of R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts (Ognuno Sofere)" and the obligatory Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber number "Music of the Night."

It all works fairly well, save the version of "My Way." Put this song to bed already.

Grade: C+

A review

Moving and uplifting

Move over Josh Groban. You've got a hot contender on your heels.

British tenor Paul Potts may not have Groban's pretty boy appeal or the requisite celebrity girlfriend, but boy, he has a fine pair of lungs.

The product of reality TV contest Britain's Got Talent, Potts first stepped up to the microphone in a karaoke competition.

Naturally, he picked an opera piece as his song of choice. And he even styled himself after one of the genre's greats, Luciano Pavarotti.

He didn't win first prize, but the prize money, £8,000 ($21,590), helped pay for vocal lessons in Italy and paved his way to stardom, including a gig in front of the late Pavarotti himself.

Last December, Prime Minister Gordon Brown even presented Potts with a discography plaque for having sold two million copies of his debut album, One Chance, and for showing that 'Britain really does have huge amounts of talent'.

One Chance packs moving, uplifting pieces, most of which would be familiar with mostlisteners.

So you can expect evergreen tunes like My Way, Ave Maria and Cavatina.

The double-CD Christmas edition includes yuletide tunes like O Holy Night and Silent Night.

Potts even pays homage to Groban by covering Secret Garden's You Raise Me Up, the song that made Groban a hit.

As a newbie, Potts lacks the kind of operatic flamboyance that more experienced tenors exploit with flourish.

The bridge part in Music Of The Night, for example, begs the theatrical stylings of Michael Crawford.

But Pott more than makes up for it with an earnest sincerity and perfect technical delivery.

My only complaint is the lack of originality in his repertoire.

As much as it is a beautiful, heartbreaking piece, I don't know how many versions I've heard of Time To Say Goodbye.
