Thank you xbons for a wonderful review with such interesting details
It sounds like Jonathan had a sympathetic audience.
As you say, it must have been hard to read somebody's script. Having said it, both Aled and Jonathan sounded like reading script when first presented Classic FM. Perhaps, it was good Jonathan had to read Aled's script and not somebody completely different
It's a shame we won't be able to hear Take 3 which would have entertained us no end to be honest, Jonathan's making mistake is a part of his charm |

Thanks Xbons - this guy really is up for anything Turning up with a few hours notice to something he has never done before FNIMN audience don't usually know much about who is going to be on a show - they rarely know when they book the tix and often not when they turn up so their initial reaction would have been interesting.
Anyway 10 out of 10 for effort and I will look forward to listening in

Thanks for the review xbons - nice to read and bless him - he fluffed his lines !! Wouldn't be our Jonathan if he didn't - all part of why we love him so much
Looking forward to listening in to this one and good to know he was thought of as a stand-in and managed to fit it in after entertaining 2 fans at lunchtime that day |

Aled did make it to Chester - thank goodness! I've posted a bit more detail on his own forum if anyone is interested (and yes, Molly, it sounds as if all was fine!)
Bridget, the producer, was the one who guided Jon through the show, of course. The timing is very much her responsibility also - Aled has explained to us before how the timing is judged throughout the show and bits of the script scrapped if they are over running (they can shorten the interval if there is an overrun in the first half, but have to be accurate in the second half to finish spot on 9.15) That is why he leaves the stage after every introduction, to check on the timing. Obviously someone else would read his script at a different pace, so that would be another matter for consideration.
As I said before, the audience had got used to and have accepted more a younger presenter so I think that hurdle had been got over. And Bridget had asked for support for a new presenter etc. All was done to make Jon's introduction there smooth; and he has appeared as a guest on FNIMN so knew the ropes a bit.
Anyway - all things considered, all turned out well! |

Thanks xbons. On my way over to read about Aled now!
Thanks for all the extra info - its been very enlightening to hear how it all is done - I wouldnt even have thought about the timings - which of course are so important.
I'm glad Bridget was there to help Jonathan on his very first time - and it was nice of her to tell the audience he was new and ask for their support.
I cant wait to hear it on the 20th.
Love Molly xx |

Hi Molly
The timings don't matter on a pre-record like Monday was - the programme can be played around with before it is broadcast, and made to fit, with bits left out etc. They do matter on a programme broadcast live, of course. Which is why I think, in general, the producers would want a new presenter to "practice" on a pre-record first.
Just to make you all feel better, the re-records were not only of Jonathan!! - a coule of bits of some of the music was re-recorded also. The production team are quite fussy, and set high standards, and do like the programme to be as near to perfect as it can be (and quite right too!)
I was just pointing out another possible difficulty, that the pace Aled speaks at and the pace Jonathan speaks at could be different, and if Aled had prepared his script to fit whatever time slots he was given, remembering that the speech has to fit round the music, it might not work out exactly the same with someone else reading it.

Thank you xbons for all the extra insight into the night and the programme itself. Lovely to hear.
I am so glad Bridget was there to help ease Jonathan into it, couldn't have been easy. Like the idea Jonathan is practising on the pre-recorded shows as I do hope he might become a bit of a regular on this!! Mind you, I wouldn't want Aled to take a back step but it is always handy to have another presenter on hand for times like this.
Very glad to hear Aled was ok for the Chester concerts too, like Molly, I will pop over and read all about it.
Must remember to tune into the programme next month! |

Thanks for the info xbons - nice to know that Jonathan was well chaperoned in the making of the programme - not an easy thing to do I imagine, having not done it before, but he loves a challenge and certainly rises to them well
Would be nice to have him as a regular with the others presenting these shows as it is good to have a few presenters for short notice stand ins such as that night.
Hope Aled is feeling better now |

Thanks xbons. Definitely a good idea to practise new presenters on the pre-recorded stuff. It's a much more difficult job than it seems. People like Aled make it look so easy - but in reality it's their expertise and experience that make it flow so well.
Jonathan did a great job on the CFM presenting - every week you could hear him growing in confidence - and hopefully he will get some more opportunities like this FNIMN one - so he can learn the craft and become a full fledged presenter one day - he's a quick learner! So long as he always keeps singing too of course!
