Citizen smiths’ show honours a glittering tradition
The largest exhibition of Scottish silver opened 25 Jan featuring items ranging from a historic drinking cup linked to Robert the Bruce to a teapot made for Billy Connolly.
Silver: Made in Scotland, at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, brings together more than 350 pieces spanning seven centuries. Other highlights include the first known coin minted for a Scottish king and a 17th-century suit made of silver thread.
The exhibition includes the first Scottish showing of another display, entitled Silver of the Stars, under which Scotland's finest silversmiths worked with 10 celebrities on new creations. Collaborations with stars including Sean Connery and Nicola Benedetti resulted in a collection of spectacular drinking vessels ranging from "the whimsical to the downright decadent".
The main exhibition will also look at the glittering tradition of silversmithing and the way in which silver has symbolised wealth, power, high status and success throughout the ages. It will showcase a dazzling array of silver including trophies, candlesticks, ceremonial maces and communion cups.
The exhibition, which runs until April 27, is open daily from 10am to 5pm, with admission costing £6 for adults and £5 for concessions. Children aged 12 and under free.
