Bryn Terfel wins choral category at Classic FM Gramophone Awards

Bass-Baritone opera and concert singer Bryn Terfel beat off stiff competition to win his third Gramophone Award at a glitzy ceremony.

The Classic FM Gramophone Awards – known as the Oscars of the classical music industry – took place at London’s Dorchester Hotel, where Terfel won the Choral Award for his recording of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius with Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé.

He even managed to triumph over renowned conductor John Eliot Gardiner and the Monteverdi Choir, who were also vying for the prize.

Talking about the winning entry, Gramophone magazine’s reviewer said: “This is the only recording of Gerontius in recent times to challenge, even shake, the supremacy of Barbirolli.

“The Hallé’s glorious recording represents the pinnacle of the orchestra’s association with Elgar’s monumental work under Elder.”

Terfel seemed particularly delighted to have won the award with Elder and the Hallé. He said in his acceptance speech: “I really enjoyed singing The Dream of Gerontius.”
