Today's birthday: Aled

The Welsh singer Aled Jones sold six million records before his voice broke when he was 16.

His 1985 recording of Walking in the Air, from the animated TV film The Snowman, is still selling. Now a baritone, he has made 25 albums and is a regular broadcaster on radio and on Songs of Praise on BBC One. He has just returned from a tour of Australia and is writing a book about his favourite hymns. He is having a week’s holiday after a busy Christmas and says: “I am spending a quiet birthday with my son and daughter.” Aled Jones is 38 today. RGT
