[ ClassicalX ] Show goes on for soprano Garrett

Bristol's summer party, The Prom on the Close, continued despite rain and strong winds.

Thousands attended the event on the grounds of Clifton College equipped with umbrellas, blankets and champagne.

Soprano Lesley Garrett said discussions were held to cancel the show because of the poor weather conditions.

Ms Garrett said: "This is what I love about the British public. The worse the weather, the more they are determined to enjoy themselves".

"We played and sung our socks off and the audience was just wonderful," she added.

The Prom on the Close launched a singing competition for young singers from the south west to perform at the event, in front of the 10,000 concert-goers.

The winner of this year's competiton was 19-year-old Eleanor Sandars from Congresbury, Bristol.

The Clifton College choir and the Emerald Ensemble also performed on the night.
