[ ClassicalX ] A hero’s welcome as people’s tenor

The so-called People's Tenor' received a hero's welcome returning after suffering his second brain tumour in 18 months.

It's incredible that at 41 he was predicting his own premature death as he under-went his second life-threatening operation just eight months ago, but here he was, sounding better than ever.

From the opening rip-roaring O Sol Mio it was clear he was going to give 110 per cent and having thanked the fans for their support during the "toughest two years" of his life he got on with having fun. Throwing away the rule book - never fearing that he offends those who try and pigeonhole him as opera, pop or easy listening - he delivered a mix of all these genres.

Joined by a full orchestra, backing singers - and even a Marilyn Monroe-style vocalist, Victoria Hart - he performed songs as diverse as Music of the Night, Bosonova, Twist and Shout and If You Don't Know Me By Now.

His dedication to his daughters, Have I Told You Lately', sung with great tenderness , contrasted beautifully with the staples like Nessun Dorma.

Jumping off stage to sing Volare, all who could hugged and kissed him, and there were five encores before Bournemouth finally let him go!
