One time £70-a-week car mechanic turned operatic tenor Alfie Boe has been on tenterhooks while on stage with the English National Opera because of false alarms over the impending birth of his first baby.
Early last week, his actress wife Sarah Jones, 27, thought she had gone into labour while she was watching his acclaimed portrayal in The Merry Widow from the stalls of the London Coliseum.
Anxious Alfie, 33, dashed off stage and still in costume, drove her to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, much to the amusement of staff.
It was, however, in vain. Then just days later, Alfie had to leave an awards ceremony early after his wife sent him a text saying she thought she was again in the early stages of labour.
This time she was right, and he made it to the hospital in time for the arrival of a 7lb 10.5oz baby daughter, whom they have named Grace.
Says a pal: "Little Grace appears to have lungs as big as her father's."
The couple met five years ago when he was singing in an opera in San Francisco and American-born Sarah was appearing in a play.
They found themselves rehearsing in the same venue and Sarah tells a friend: "He made me a cup of tea and it was love at first sight."
