Classical Star – coming soon to BBC Two.

The hunt for Britain's next classical music superstar is on and, for one exceptional young musician, the opportunity of a lifetime is within reach.

The winner of BBC Two's Classical Star will win a top record deal and the chance to launch their dream career.

Acclaimed musician and Classical Star Musical Director, Matthew Barley, is searching for a top-class performer who has the ability to broaden the appeal of classical music. Aged between 12 and 19, and already at least grade 8 in their chosen instrument, the winner must have that extra-special something to impress the prestigious judging panel.

Through nationwide auditions, 18 candidates have been shortlisted but only the best nine candidates will be selected to attend the Music Academy, where Barley has developed a rigorous and demanding three-week schedule.

He will oversee an intensive programme of teaching, practice and master classes from top artists and industry specialists, all aimed at developing the contestants' all-round performance skills and abilities.

Each week, the expert judging panel will choose two of the academy pupils who, in their view, have not made the grade and who will be sent home – until only three finalists remain.

These young musicians will have just six weeks to prepare for the final performance that has the potential to make them classical music superstars and change their lives for ever.

The prize is a recording contract with Universal Classics and Jazz, as well as marketing support and a training bursary.

That's it!! I am well and truly hooked on this fab programme. So well presented and judged. :)

The refreshing part of this programme is that although it just sounds like another one of those X factor type reality shows it is actually about the musicians/contestants themselves and not about in-fighting between judges and Saturday night audience ratings.

The judges are not only judging the musical ability, of which there was plenty to go around, but also their personalities and passion towards the music. Yes, they are looking for the star of the future but not based solely on who will sell the most records but on their ability to give a performance on stage.

I love the attitude of these judges, They want to dispel the myth that classical music lives up in the clouds and want to bring it down to earth in being only two kinds of music on this planet - good music and bad music and not segregating it into various categories/genres. I loved the comment that they are looking for someone who has stage presence and who shines just by walking onto a stage before even a note has been struck.

The workshops were amazing, especially the one about improvisation. Taking away their instruments and giving them a task of creating their own music/rhythm. It reminded me a little of G4 at bootcamp when they were arranging their own music and not just learning the words to a song, making it their own. :)

To me this is the programme to follow new and exciting talent and I think the makers of other similar programmes should sit up and watch too as they will learn a thing or two about finding the real stars of the future, not just in the classical world.

I suppose programmes like the X factor do have their place - some real talent is found but it is rare. We only have to look at the past 3 years and need only a couple of fingers to count them! It exists as an entertainment programme primarily. This programme is after the talent. It started off with 18 talented people to whittle down to 9 in the first episode!

It will start to be obvious soon who is good enough to go forward, not just their talent but their attitude and personalities will start to shine.

Roll on Tuesday nights for the next few weeks!! :D
