The main attraction at this year's Cleethorpes Goes Classical, the orchestra were a sensation. Not only was it of the highest caliber, it were an ensemble clearly in love with movie maestro John Williams. He is best known for his themes to Star Wars and work with Steven Spielberg - he has scored all but one of Spielberg's films since The Sugarland Express.Today Williams' work is the most well-known and most iconic classical music of the 20th Century. The orchestra was so enthused with him, it played no fewer than six pieces including ET, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Harry Potter. But Saturday night was not just about hits from the big screen, although the opening of Williams' Star Wars Main Theme and Imperial March were standout.Amongst the film scores were beautiful renditions of Bizet's Carmen and Rodrigo's Aranjuez both brought alive by bass baritone, Nicolas Garrett. The evening ended in true last of the Proms style as union jacks were flown and voices raised. The audience was delighted by a stirring and playful Fantasia on British Sea Songs while Rule Britannia not only ruled the waves but also the night. This was followed by Jerusalem and Pomp and Circumstance March No.1, both wonderfully captured by the orchestra and the two soloists - Garrett and soprano, Sophie Louise Dann. Then to finish, as fireworks lit the night sky, a stirring version of Jupiter from Holst's The Planets Suite.A fitting end, as it is from this suite that John Williams has taken the most of his inspiration. And for encore, the audience was treated to more fireworks and more Williams, as the Superman theme filled Cleethorpes. All in all a fantastic night, roll on next year's show!
